Today I would like to tell you about the new adware threat that is DSrch. Like any adware, it will force advertisements upon you. These advertisements take the annoying form of pop-ups and pop-unders on your desktop. You will also experience your Web browser settings being changed and your search results being redirected.
This is unfortunately not all that DSrch does. It also monitors your Web browsing habits and passes that information on to parent servers, which in turn decide which advertisements to flood you with. DSrch also opens up a hole in your computer’s security that other Trojans and malware can take advantage of.
That brings us to how DSrch gets on your computer. There is a Trojan called Vundo that makes its way onto your computer by pretending to be an ActiveX or video codec. The Vundo Trojan then downloads and installs malware and adware. In the case of Dsrch, some of the components pretend to be Internet Explorer plug-ins.
You will find that removing DSrch is not an easy matter. If you try to use "Add or Remove Programs," you will find on reboot that you did not remove Dsrch, as it will start up again after reboot. This is because the program is a rootkit. Rootkits are adware, spyware, and malware that dig into the registry, or root, of your operating system and take residence there.
You could try to remove DSrch manually, but there are problems with manually removing it as well for a couple reasons. The first reason is you have to go into Windows Registry Editor and remove the files one at a time. This is a problem because it is not only time consuming, but you can make your computer inoperable if you delete the wrong file. On top of those problems, if you miss a file while manually removing it, it will reinstall itself on boot up and all that time looking for and removing the files that compose the program will be wasted.
