I have to admit, there is an appeal to having software that allows me to browse anonymously. Not that I have anything to hide, per se, rather the notion of others being able to spy on me at any given time is unappealing. Following this line of logic, I decided to get myself a program called Ultimate Security Suite. It was exciting because it promised that it would encrypt all of my Internet activity between my computer and server, make my emails unreadable, and provide an all-around shielding from prying eyes from the comfort of my own home. Little did I know the program had an ulterior motive for offering me such a “great” service. Guess I should have known better than to trust my credit card information to people who specialized in being invisible.
Turns out Ultimate Security Suite is rogue antispyware. While it does allow you to browse the web anonymously by hiding the browsing IP, it simultaneously logs all of your online activities itself – so much for being anonymous. Worse, it is loaded with spyware, and spends much of its time hogging your computer’s processing speed and Internet bandwidth so that it can funnel all of your private information off to interested third parties. I hadn’t been browsing “anonymously” for more than a week before I got a call from my bank alerting me of suspicious charges on my credit card – a card that I had ONLY used to purchase Ultimate Security Suite, nothing else. Small wonder where the fraud came from!
After this incident, I realized that I had fallen for a sham, but I wasn’t aware that the program was stealing information off my computer at that point, so I figured that as long as I had already paid my $100 bucks, I might as well keep using the program and get my money’s worth. It wasn’t until my computer slowed to an absolute crawl and my banking software registered an entry that I didn’t do that the anonymous browsing suddenly lost its appeal. I realized how much I was putting my computer and my personal information at risk, and knew at that point that I needed to get Ultimate Security Suite off of my computer fast.
At first, I tried to do it manually. I did everything I was supposed to – blocked the sites, killed the processes, deleted the associated files and registry values, unregistered the DLLs, but each time I did it, the program just kept reinstalling itself when I would reboot.
I finally decided to get professional help, and boy, am I glad I did! I decided to use SpyZooka, because it was the only antispyware that I could find that guaranteed 100% removal of any kind of malware, and it found Ultimate Security Suite along with about a dozen other bugs right off the bat. Luckily for me, I haven’t had problems since. Well, not the spyware kind anyway. I’ve still gotta deal with my identity theft issues.
